Celebrities pay homage to George Segal after the death of ‘The Goldbergs’ star at 87

Celebrities from around the world accessed Twitter on Tuesday to pay tribute to Hollywood icon George Segal after news of his death at the age of 87.

The actor’s wife, Sonia, confirmed his death in a statement shared with Fox News on Tuesday.

“The family is devastated to announce that George Segal passed away this morning due to complications from bypass surgery,” the statement said.

Segal appeared regularly on ABC’s “The Goldbergs” and was nominated for an Oscar in 1967 for his supporting role in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” As a result, he developed many friendships and a positive reputation within the show business, which led many who knew him to speak on social media to honor the late TV and film star.

RIP George Segal, ” wrote comedian Brian Posehn.

“So saddened by the loss of George Segal. I grew up loving your films, from ‘Where’s Daddy?’ for ‘Bye Bye Braverman’ by Sidney Lumet, for ‘The Hot Rock’. I was able to work with him several times. That was at lunch last year. My deepest condolences to your family and friends, ” comedian Bob Saget added.

The actor’s final episode of “The Goldbergs” airs on April 7. A tribute to the air is also expected. On the sitcom, he played Albert “Pops” Solomon, the grandfather of three children in the 1980s.

In a statement provided to Fox News, ABC also paid tribute to the actor.

A team from “The Goldbergs” also provided a statement to Fox News.

“On behalf of everyone at Goldberg, we are devastated by the loss of our dear friend George. He was kind, sweet, as well as talented and funny. George was the true epitome of the class and he touched all of our lives deeply,” they said. “It was an honor and a privilege to have you as a colleague and friend all these years. It is no surprise to any of us who know him so well that he is a true national treasure. You will be missed by everyone. POPS, we will miss your banjo performance and your contagious laugh.
