Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the agency’s director, said on Friday that the risk of infection from contaminated surfaces is low and regular cleaning with soap or detergent is effective in reducing the spread of the coronavirus. However, disinfection is still recommended when there are suspected or confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the previous 24 hours.

“When no person suspected or confirmed of COVID-19 has been known to have been in a space, cleaning once a day is usually sufficient to remove the virus that may be on the surfaces and help maintain a healthy installation,” said CDC guidelines.

Walensky also said that nebulization, fumigation and electrostatic or wide-area spraying are not recommended as a primary disinfection method.

Surface transmission can be reduced by wearing an appropriate mask, hand washing and following CDC and federal safety guidelines, Walensky said.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is normally spread from person to person while individuals are close, she said.
