CDC: COVID-19 quarantine unnecessary for fully vaccinated people

People who are fully vaccinated no longer need to be quarantined after exposure to someone infected with the coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Wednesday.

Yes but: The CDC’s definition of “fully vaccinated” is narrow in scope. The agency recommends caution, regardless of vaccination status, especially as new variants continue to spread.

Details: Since both vaccines currently authorized require two doses, the CDC defines a fully vaccinated person as one who meets the following criteria:

  • He waited two weeks or more after the second photo in the series of two photos.
  • It is within 3 months of receiving the final dose of the series.
  • He remains asymptomatic since exposure to COVID-19.

Those who do not meet all three criteria must be quarantined for two weeks, according to CDC guidance. Fully vaccinated people should also watch for symptoms.

What they are saying: “This recommendation to dispense quarantine for people with immunity derived from the vaccine aligns with the quarantine recommendations for those with natural immunity, which facilitates implementation,” said the CDC.
