“We will not give in to the demands or negotiate with the actor, knowing that this may eventually lead to the release of the compromised data,” wrote CD Projekt Red in response. He added that while some devices on his network have been encrypted, “our backups remain intact”, and he has protected his IT infrastructure and started to restore data.
The hack can be alarming for another reason, since Projekt’s parent CD owns the GoG gaming platform, which keeps information private to multiple subscribers. However, he said that “at this point we can confirm that – as far as we know – the compromised systems did not contain any personal data from our players or users of our services”.
CD Projekt Red has been hacked before in 2017, and said at the time in a similar message that the thieves had stolen “documents linked to the first designs of the next game, Cyberpunk 2077. ”Although nothing happened with this incident, the latest hack looks more serious.
Even without the attack, the last six months were not a beautiful one for CD Projekt Red. Cyberpunk 2077 released with several bugs, Sony ended up removing the game from its console stores and Microsoft offered refunds to anyone who wanted to.
