CD Projekt Ransomware Attack interrupts ‘Cyberpunk’ updates

A recent Bloomberg report states that game developer CD Projekt SA was forced to postpone a promised update for its highly criticized blockbuster game Cyberpunk 2077, claiming that a recent ransomware attack resulted in hackers stealing the game’s source code and blocking the company’s systems.

Bloomberg reports that CD Projekt SA said on Wednesday that it will delay a new update for its hit game Cyberpunk 2077, claiming that the slow progress in the game is due to a major security breach.

Bloomberg claims that the publisher did not notice that most of the company’s employees have been prevented from accessing their workstations in the past two weeks due to a ransomware attack. Bloomberg writes:

The work stoppage is the result of a ransomware attack released on February 9. The extent of the outage, which was not previously reported, represents a major setback for CD Projekt’s attempt to rescue a game that is in desperate need of repair.
CD Projekt said it refused to pay ransom to the hackers. As a result, employees remain unable to connect to the company’s virtual private network, making it impossible to access the systems and tools needed to do most of their jobs, people said, requesting anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Although some CD Projekt employees work at the Warsaw headquarters, most are at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. CD Projekt did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bloomberg notes that the hack had a huge effect on employees. Hackers may have gained access to employees’ personal information, including Polish identification numbers and passport details, prompting the company to instruct employees to freeze their accounts and report the security breach to the appropriate authorities.
