CD Projekt, the company behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, was the target of a major “cyber attack” on Monday, according to a statement posted on Twitter. The hackers allegedly stole “certain data belonging to the capital group CD Projekt,” said CD Projekt. The company said it is currently protecting its servers and restoring encrypted data.
In the ransom note published by CD Projekt, hackers said they stole the source code for Cyberpunk 2077, The magician 3, Gwent, and “the unreleased version of Witcher 3. ”The group said it also accessed“ documents related to accounting, administration, legal, HR, [and] Investor Relations. “CD Projekt has not confirmed the stolen data, but said in its statement that none of the user’s personal data for any of its services has been compromised.

The hackers gave CD Projekt 48 hours to initiate contact before “the source code is sold or leaked online”.
“Your public image will fall even more and people will see how you [sic] shit your company’s functions, ”said the hacker in the note. “Investors will lose confidence in their company and the stock will fall further.”
CD Projekt said it will not negotiate with hackers. She said she is aware that “compromised data” can be released and that the company is “taking the necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such disclosure”. CD Projekt is working with authorities and “forensic IT experts” to investigate the hack.
Monday’s hack follows a difficult release for Cyberpunk 2077, the long-awaited title that was released in December 2020. The game was released with a number of performance issues – especially on high-end consoles. CD Projekt and other stores were forced to offer refunds for the game, which was later removed from Sony’s PlayStation Store. CD Projekt is also facing several investor class action lawsuits.

Studio executives at CD Projekt have since apologized for the troubled release.

CD Projekt Red, the company’s development arm, has released patches and hotfixes for Cyberpunk 2077. Major updates will come later this year, the developer said.
