Exactly two years after HBO’s eighth and final season The Game of Thrones premiered, the cameras will start running on its successor, the prequel series, Dragon House.
During a question and answer session as part of the HCA / HBO Max TCA part, HBO and HBO Max content director Casey Bloys revealed that Dragon House, George RR Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will start production in April.
“We are excited about Miguel and Ryan, their collaboration and collaboration with us, and looking forward to getting started,” said Bloys, who hopes to be able to visit the set if vaccinated in time. “This is all moving forward and we are excited about it.”
HBO developed five different prequel ideas, commissioning scripts that resulted in a pilot, who didn’t go ahead, and a direct order for the series to Dragon House. Now, the premium cable network is again accelerating the development of new prequel perspectives, including a serial adaptation by George RR Martin Tales of Dunk & Egg soap operas, with the idea of having multiple Took series in the air at the same time.

“We have been talking about areas to be developed, which is where this prequel came from,” said Bloys. “We are talking about other areas that also make sense. George RR Martin’s world is so big and what is interesting about him is not only big, but he has many scripts in terms of history. So, one of the great things about Dragon House is that it’s an established story that takes you to The Game of Thrones the show, and there are many small branches. There are many opportunities and stories to tell. “
Bloys would not commit to a series of Took series that he would like to see on the air.
“In terms of the right number, I would say the number is the programs that are good,” he said. “I prefer to have good scripts and make stories that are worth telling than to shoot for a number of programs. I don’t necessarily have a number in mind, but the goal is always the same as it is, let’s do business with people we believe in and shows that believe and care about the rest later. “
Bloys did not specify who these people would be, but Bruno Heller is believed to be one of the writers who had an exploratory meeting on the possible fight against a Took project.
Although in the last two years the focus has been on prequels, Bloys does not rule out possible mothership spinoffs Took series in the future.
“The good news with the prequels is that George made a story,” said Bloys. “We are working with George, it would really be something that we would talk to him about, but for now, the prequels fit in because of the really extensive story that George exposed in his world.
With HBO Max as a sister, HBO is focusing on live action films, as HBO Max has positioned itself as WarnerMedia’s premium home for animation.
Because of this, if the The Game of Thrones the franchise expands for animation, as it has been rumored, that the branch would be for the streaming platform. (In his dual role, Bloys oversees the programming of HBO and HBO Max.) But at the moment, that possibility is far from real.
“It was really a reflection, as adult animation would be, it would be Took landed on that, so it was literally a conversation and there were some conversations with writers, what do you think, what would it be, is there anything about that, “said Bloys about exploring the idea of a cartoon Took Series. “When I say embryonic, I mean really embryonic.”
He reiterated that the material and talent would drive the expansion of the franchise.
“I never wanted to do that with an order that you should have three series right now or you should explore adult animation or you should do that,” he said. “It’s really coming, it would be interesting, it’s good, we have a writer that we believe in. This is the type of approach we are taking. I think you have to do it because if you don’t, it would lead to doing shows because of that. “
