Cardinals keeping Adam Wainwright on a one-year deal

Central NL’s free agent spending EXPLODED, with the St. Louis Cardinals striving to retain its longtime holder, Adam Wainwright.

Relatively speaking, Wainwright was paid:

Wainwright, 39, has been very good for the Cardinals for the past two years, after looking like things could be over for him. This year will be his 17th in the major leagues with the Cardinals. I enjoy another year of cheering against him and getting frustrated when he confuses the Cubs with his increasingly meh stuff.

His business is probably appropriate, considering what the holders of his caliber were getting on the market, but I guarantee that the Cardinals didn’t expect to pay that much when the off-season started in November.

It is now up to the Cardinals to finalize an agreement with their other long-standing legend, Yadi Molina.
