Captain Toad’s levels received a cooperative boost to Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

The four-player co-op mode now extends to Captain Toad’s Adventures

As a fan of the original Wii U, I no longer vaguely expected to play Super Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury “when the time is right” to want to play immediately in February – and feel good about that choice. I wasn’t mentally at that point until we saw what Bowser’s Fury implied and learned that there would be co-op (although only for two players instead of the four player hijinks in the main campaign).

This is a turnaround. And interestingly, it is a similar trajectory to Pikmin 3 Deluxe – another genuinely excellent Wii U jewel that I thought was worth picking up again for its extra multiplayer support.

That said, it looks like Nintendo is going further with Super Mario 3D World + Bowser Fury. As shown in a game clip on Twitter today, the updated Switch title will feature four-player cooperation at Captain Frog’s puzzle levels. Remember that? The lines are very blurred for me right now.

Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World on Wii U they were a solo case (only for GamePad), but on Switch, Captain Toad will be accompanied by blue, green and yellow Toads – assuming you have IRL backup. You will “work together” to collect Green Stars. (And by that I mean that you guys are going to bother each other a lot.)

This is undoubtedly a small addition to the grand scheme of 3D World, one that many people will not fully use, but it’s important. When it comes to video game reissues, little touches always matter.
