Captain Sir Tom Moore: UK war veteran who walked the NHS dies of Covid

Captain Tom Moore, the century-old war veteran who became an icon of the UK blockade after an epic sponsored walk to raise money for the National Health Service, died at the age of 100.

Moore’s family announced his death with a post on his Twitter account. He had recently tested positive for Covid-19, attracting messages of support from Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other prominent figures.

“I’m sorry to hear that Captain Tom passed away at the hospital”Said Health Secretary Matt Hancock on Twitter. “He was a great British hero who showed the best of our country and I send my best wishes to his family right now.”

Moore, who was named a knight by the Queen for his charitable exploits, raised over 32 million pounds ($ 44 million) for the NHS after making 100 laps in his garden before his 100th birthday last year.
