Capitol policeman who died shortly after the pro-Trump riot will lie in honor

Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died in early January due to injuries sustained while responding to the siege of the Capitol by a pro-Trump crowd, will be honored at the U.S. Capitol Roundabout, Mayor Nancy Pelosi ( D-California) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) announced Friday night.

Why it matters: Lying in honor is a final tribute reserved only for private citizens who have rendered distinct services to the nation, according to the Capitol Architect.

What they are saying: “The United States Congress is united in grief, gratitude and solemn appreciation for the services rendered to Officer Brian Sicknick,” wrote Pelosi and Schumer in a statement.

  • “The heroism of Officer Sicknick and the Capitol police force during the violent uprising against our Capitol helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy and ensure that Congress was not diverted from our duty to the Constitution.”
  • “May this ceremony and the knowledge that so many mourn and pray for them be a comfort to Officer Sicknick’s family during this sad period.”
