Capitol Police Union offers ‘overwhelming vote’ of mistrust

The US Capitol Police Union on Monday gave an “overwhelming vote of No Confidence” to the top leadership of the Capitol Police.

The vote comes after the Executive Council of the Capitol Police Union last week asked its members to consider a vote of censure following the mismanagement of the top leadership of the US Capitol riots on January 6.

The Council said it decided to hold a vote after reviewing the events and even the January 6 events, which resulted in the deaths of six people and approximately 140 injured Capitol and Metropolitan Police officers.

“The past week of the impeachment trial showed members of Congress and across the country, devastating details of the violence that Capitol police faced during the insurrection,” union president Gus Papathanasiou said in a statement. “It was the darkest day in the department’s history.”

The union said 92% of its members voted against interim chief Yogananda Pittman, who took office two days after the unrest. Papathanasiou said that there are leaders in the department who are best suited for leadership.

“We hope that Congressional leaders and the entire Capitol community will understand that continuing with the current USCP leadership is not an option,” he said.

“The current leadership is just a continuation of the previous regimes in this Department and there needs to be accountability. Their failures are inexcusable. This vote, in which the majority of the negotiating unit’s directors participated, shows that they have lost our confidence. The anger in this department is widespread and the trust that has been broken will not be regained. “
