Capitol disturbance investigation: 275 cases are open, US prosecutors say

That number will easily grow to more than 300 by the end of the day, Michael Sherwin, US attorney for the District of Columbia, told reporters on Friday.

Shocking new details show that last week’s riot was extraordinarily violent and posed a mortal danger to key members of the United States government.

Police officers have not denied that they are investigating allegations that the Capitol Police and lawmakers were involved in the riot. Steven D’Antuono, of the FBI’s Field Office in Washington, said the FBI “will not leave a stone unturned” and is “examining every piece of the puzzle”. They did not carry out these investigations, however. Several Democratic members of the House have expressed concern that some Republican lawmakers are in some way helping protesters.
Some of the individuals who violated the Capitol intended to “capture and murder elected officials,” federal prosecutors wrote in a new lawsuit.

While that may have been the motivation for some, Sherwin said that “we have no direct evidence of capture and death teams,” but added that counterterrorism prosecutors are still looking for coordination between the groups.

Vice President Mike Pence also came closer than initially known to the crowd, according to a new report in The Washington Post that emphasizes the level of danger he and other government leaders faced during the January 6 uprising. Some of the pro-Trump rioters who ravaged the Capitol were heard shouting “where is Mike Pence” and seen in the video shouting “hang Mike Pence” – upset that Pence was doing his constitutional duty to certify the results of the November elections.

Pence, according to the Post, remained in the Senate chamber for about 14 minutes after Capitol Police reported the initial attempted breach of the building.

Police being investigated

Authorities are investigating an increasing number of police officers who allegedly participated in the disturbances.

“Unfortunately, as this case progresses, we see evidence that police officers, both old and current, may be off duty, participating in this rebel activity,” said Sherwin.

Two police officers from Rocky Mount, Virginia, were arrested on Thursday on federal charges related to the riot, Sherwin said.

They vowed to protect America. Some also joined the riot

“We don’t care what your profession is, who you are, who you are affiliated with, whether you are conducting or engaging in criminal activity, we will charge you and you will be arrested,” said Sherwin.

No business

Even if some federal defendants are indulging, they will not be able to make arrangements in which their defense lawyers negotiate with prosecutors at this time.

“We are not doing business with anyone. Even if people are reporting, they will be held accountable,” said Sherwin.

Sometimes, in major investigations, prosecutors allow defendants to negotiate their charges if they offer law enforcement assistance.

Prosecutors noted in court actions how several accused defendants have already spoken to investigators about the riot and how many have posted about their experience or footage of the disturbances on social media.
