Capitol chaos causes Texas Castro brothers to demand Senator Cruz’s departure

Two Texas Democrats want Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Lone Star State to step down after his objection to the results of the 2020 presidential election in the Senate plenary on Wednesday night and blame him for chaos on Capitol Hill.

“Someone on the Senate floor should ask for @SenTedCruz to resign tonight,” tweeted Deputy Joaquin Castro, highlighting Cruz’s name on Twitter.

Castro represents the 20th Congressional District in the state. Her brother Julian, who ran a candidacy for the Democratic presidential primaries of short duration, responded to another tweet from his brother, using the same language.

“@tedcruz must resign from the United States Senate immediately,” wrote the former mayor of San Antonio and President Obama’s secretary for housing and urban development.

The pair toppled the home state senator after he was among a handful of Senate colleagues to oppose President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victories in Arizona and Pennsylvania. The objections were rejected by 93-6 and 92-7, respectively. The House’s objections saw significantly more Republican support, but they also failed.

As Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building on Wednesday, a woman was shot by the Capitol Police in a locked door, according to officials. Three other people died of medical emergencies during the chaos.

Cruz condemned the riots on Wednesday afternoon in another tweet.

“Violence is always unacceptable,” he wrote. “Even when the passions are high.”

But Beto O’Rourke, another Democratic candidate for the presidential primaries that failed in 2020 and a Democratic candidate who lost to Cruz in the 2018 Senate race, also had a brief Twitter fight with Cruz over Capitol chaos.

“It’s your selfish sedition attempt that helped inspire these terrorists and your coup attempt,” tweeted O’Rourke.

“Stop feeding the division,” replied Cruz. “Stop spreading hate. Stop using malicious rhetoric (like false and reckless accusations of ‘sedition’). Stop showing contempt for half the country that disagrees with you.”

New York Democratic MP Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also asked Cruz to step down on Thursday and blamed him for the four deaths during the unrest.

Cruz responded by calling her a “liar” and promising that she “is not going anywhere” with the parties at odds because of her “socialist friends”.
