Capitals score five unanswered goals during an absurd recovery in the second period

Someone pinch me. This cannot be real.

In the first period, Washington Capitals seemed listless. Horrible, terrible and terrible. They gave up three consecutive goals for the Islanders and looked like they would finally lose their first game in regulation this season.

Instead, our Cardiac Caps found their scoring touch in the break and scored five goals during the period they suck at most – the second – to take the lead.

Conor Sheary (1), 3-1 Islands

Conor Sheary started scoring 9:07 in the period. After a shot by John Carlson was blocked in front of the net, Sheary took the rebound and beat a surprised Semyon Varlamov to put the Capitals on the table. It was Sheary’s first goal as capital.

Conor Sheary (2), 3-2 Islands

A minute and 13 seconds later, Sheary scored again. The two-time Stanley Cup champion deftly redirected Zdeno Chara’s high shot to the back of the string. THE SHORTEST FACE IN ICE EMBRACING THE HIGHEST FACE IN ICE. That’s right!

Garnet Hathaway, 3-3

Garnet Hathaway would tie the game the next round. Scratching from the right wing, Hathaway received a pass from Carl Hagelin and knocked Varly across the net. It’s TIED.

John Carlson (PPG), 4-3 Caps

Three minutes and five seconds later, John Carlson scored from Ovi’s office, firing a pass from Justin Schultz to the back of the net. CAPITALS HAVE THE CHASE.

Zdeno Chara, 5-3 Caps

And then: BIG Z. The tallest player in NHL history scored his first goal as Capital with a howitzer from the edge. WHAT’S EVEN HAPPENING.

The capitals scored their first 3 goals in 9 shots. They scored all five in nine minutes and 23 seconds in total.

According to NBC Sports Washington, the last time the Capitals scored five goals in a period was when Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick during a January 18, 2020 game against … you guessed it! … the Islanders. The Capitals responded after Devon Toews made fun of the Capitals with Evgeny Kuznetsov’s celly bird.

I would also like to point out that this happened after I called the pandas at the National Zoo #BadLuckPandas during the first break.
