CANTON – A 14-year-old Canton girl accused of stabbing and killing her 65-year-old grandmother is facing murder charges.
The murder took place around 7:15 am on block 4150 of Kimberly Drive in Canton on February 21, although the victim’s body was found on February 22 by police.
Police say the grandmother, Cynthia Mosby, from Canton, took custody of the teenager.
The charges against the teenager were announced by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office on Saturday. She is charged with first-degree murder and second-degree murder.

According to the prosecution, the teenager is not being accused as an adult. However, she was designated as an adult.
“This means that, after conviction, the appointment of an adult allows the judge to have the option of convicting the defendant as a teenager or adult, or to convict a mixed youth with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is rehabilitated, ”the prosecution said in a statement on Saturday announcing the charges.

Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy added: “Mrs. Mosby’s fatal stabbing is very sad and disturbing. Mrs. Mosby was a nurse who was raising her granddaughter. Our prayers go out to your son and family. In this case, the 14-year-old girl is being designated as an adult because, after conviction, this gives the judge greater flexibility during the sentence to provide options for the rehabilitation of this very troubled young man. “
Police say Mosby’s body was found by his son, the suspect’s father. When he found Mosby at Canton’s house, his daughter was nowhere to be seen.
The policemen were directed to a room in the house, where the victim’s body was lying on the floor with several knife wounds.

The prosecution said the teenager had planned the crime, although no further details were provided.
On February 21, the teenager allegedly killed her grandmother by stabbing her several times with a kitchen knife.
After the murder, she stayed at a motel in Southgate. On February 22, Canton investigators found the teenager at the hotel and arrested her.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Cynthia Mosby. Our policemen and detectives worked tirelessly to identify the tragic circumstances of his death. The analysis and prosecution decisions of Wayne County Attorney Kym Worthy were invaluable after this set of challenging facts, ”said Canton Police Services Director Chad Baugh.
The teenager is being represented by local criminal justice attorney Jeffrey Schwartz and is currently being held inside Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center.
She was referred for competency and criminal liability assessments. The next trial is on April 15.
