Now, another California-based electric vehicle startup, Canoo, has unveiled a pickup truck with a “forward cabin” design that places the driver almost directly on the front wheels.
Instead of a hood, the Canoo truck has a flat front like a van. This allows more space for the cargo bed space without making the truck too big.
The Canoo truck is 184 inches long, or just a little more than a Toyota Corolla. This it is much shorter than the Tesla Cybertuck, but the six-foot bed is only six inches shorter. (However, the Cybertuck accommodates more people.) The Canoo cargo bucket also has an extension that can slide out, providing two more feet in length.
The body shape of the Canoo truck is similar to some trucks from the 1950s and 60s, such as the General Motors Corvair pickup truck, the Jeep Forward Control pickup truck and the Volkswagen Type 2 pickup truck, which was based on the VW bus
The elimination of the engine also allows more storage space inside the truck, in addition to just the bucket. There are additional front storage under the cabin, for example. The door that folds down at the front of the truck can also be used as a work table, in the same way that people usually use the rear doors of the pickup trucks.
Likewise, the doors also fold on the sides of the loader to allow easier access. These doors can also be used as countertops.
Canoo expects the truck to produce up to 600 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque from two electric motors, which is more than a Ford F-150 with a V8 engine. The truck will be able to run more than 200 miles with cargo, the company said.
Canoo previously revealed two vans, a work van and a lifestyle passenger van. The vans and pickup are based on the Canoo skateboard platform that allows a variety of body styles.
