Candace Bushnell says restarting ‘SATC’ will work without Kim Cattrall

“Sex and the City” author Candace Bushnell told Page Six that she thinks her recently announced reboot will work just fine without Kim Cattrall – despite widespread doubts from her fans.

Cattrall co-starred in all six seasons of the original HBO blockbuster TV show and both film adaptations.

But – amid an ugly public feud with co-star Sarah Jessica Parker – she said she will not participate in the next HBO Max makeover, which was officially announced on Sunday. Page Six reported for the first time in December that the show was underway.

Critics and fans fear the show will not go well without Cattrall’s lovable crude character, Samantha. A typical social media reaction came from a Twitter user named Rebeckah Hird, who wrote, “‘Sex and the City’ doing a new show without Samantha is like Destiny’s Child making a comeback without Beyoncé.”

But Bushnell, who wrote the 1994 novel on which the show was based, tells us that the anguish is unjustified.

“You know what, I think everything is fine. Kim is an adult woman. She is 64 years old and made a decision that I am sure she has ten good reasons for, and I respect that, ”she told us,“ I also think it will be interesting. But I also know that there are many interesting characters like [Cynthia Nixon’s] Miranda. We are all Mirandas. Miranda is an interesting character – but I don’t know what they are going to do. “

“Kim should be happy – and I think she is happy. I think your character, Samantha, will always be an inspiration for them, ”he added. “So, somehow, I imagine that she will be there in spirit and as an inspiration that gives them a chance to explore sexuality with different characters [without Samantha hogging the libidinous spotlight]. “

She also said that the team of award-winning writers on the reboot would have plenty of ideas to make up for Cattrall’s absence.

As early as 2017, Cattrall made it clear that she is no longer interested in working with Parker. When Piers Morgan asked her in an interview that year if she would consider working on a planned third film “Sex and the City”, she said her decision to pass was not about salary requirements or contracts, but that, “this is really where I question the people of ‘Sex and the City’ and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker, in the sense that I think she could have been nicer. ”

When Parker offered his condolences to Cattrall in 2018 after his brother, Chris, passed away, Cattrall responded by tweeting, “My mom asked me today, ‘When is that @ sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, going to leave you alone?’ Your continued reaching out is a painful reminder of how cruel you really were then and now. Let me make that very clear. (If you haven’t already) You are not my family. You are not my friend. So, I’m writing to tell you one last time to stop exploring our tragedy in order to restore your ‘nice girl’ personality. “

Parker, however, was a little more conciliatory. When a fan wrote on Parker’s Instagram that he would miss “Kim / Samantha” on restart, Parker replied, “Us too. We loved her so much. “

Bushnell is currently working on the TV adaptation of his novel, “Is There Still Sex in the City?”
