Can helping the Jets land Deshaun Watson be the key to a 49ers quarterback upgrade worthy of the SuperBowl?

It’s Groundhog Day, so we thought of honoring the holiday with another possible quarterback scenario for the 49ers this off season. Since all indications are that the 49ers will not be trading for Deshaun Watson, what if they helped in their quarterback situation, making it easier for someone else to do just that? Leo Luna made that bold suggestion on today’s Niner Nation-podcast.

“My dream scenario is to negotiate with the New York Jets. You have that relationship there with Robert Saleh, “said Luna,” You are going to give them a better package to go and get Deshaun Watson. You give them the 12th choice this year, one next year and maybe their third compensatory choice this year for the second selection [in 2021]. Now the Jets take an extra to try and catch Deshaun Watson, so that’s why they can do that. Watson’s marketing representation is in New York, so it’s an adjustment, and now 49ers can take Zach Wilson second overall overall with that. “

While it still seems crazy to switch to any other quarterback while Deshaun is available, this is actually a diabolically good scenario for Leo. The 49ers could potentially update their most important position without having to fully mortgage future withdrawals, the Jets have a reward to offer Texans and Houston can tell his fans, “We have five choices for the guy in the first round”. This assumes that the Jets offered Houston all the choices from the first round that they would have in the next two years, but still, if you are the Jets, why not? As I said, it only affects your drafts for two years, thanks to the extra choices you get when trading Jamal Adams. Who refuses that?
