Camels ‘Confused’ by Snow as Saudi Arabian Winter Storm Goes Viral Video

The video shows camels caught in a blizzard after a rare winter storm covered parts of the Middle East, from Saudi Arabia to Syria and from Libya to Lebanon, in the snow.

Parts of the region have seen their first blizzard in years, blocking roads and closing vaccination centers.

Images showing the unlikely scene of camels being whipped by a snowstorm outside the city of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, were widely shared on social media.

Tourists reportedly came from distant places like the United Arab Emirates to witness snowfall, which is not uncommon in the mountainous area around Tabuk, but it marks a stark contrast to dry and desert conditions in other parts of the region.

Saudi officials issued weather warnings on Wednesday, including storms, blizzards and strong winds across much of the country.

Climate expert Abdullah Al-Misnad said snow in the Tabuk region would cause the permanent snow line to drop to 1,000 meters.

In January, thick snow covered the Aseer region, which lies south of the Saudi city of Mecca, along the coast of the Red Sea.

The weather event is said to be the first time in more than 50 years that snow has fallen there.

Elsewhere in this week, in northern Jordan, 20 centimeters of snow fell, while winter rains also affected the capital, Amman.

There, severe weather conditions closed schools and universities and the COVID-19 vaccination program was suspended.

Strong winds also hit the region with Storm Joyce bringing bursts of over 60 mph (100km / h) to Jordan and Lebanon.

About 15 centimeters of snow fell in Syria, while the capital, Damascus, had its first winter rains of the year.

Neighboring Israel also saw blizzards, including in Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. On Wednesday night, Israeli police closed the main road that connected Tel Aviv to Jerusalem due to snow.

Parts of Turkey and Iraq saw similar scenes, while in Libya, residents in the far northeast of the country took their children to make snowmen and snowball fights.

Parts of the region have seen significant snowfalls in the past month, including the Algerian Sahara desert, where temperatures have dropped below freezing and sand dunes have been covered with snow.

The city of Ain Sefra has experienced snow only for the fourth time in more than four decades.

This occurs when parts of Texas were hit by heavy snowfalls after the state was hit by an unprecedented winter storm.

Photos and videos shared on Twitter show cities like Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso and Del Rio covered by a blanket of snow.
