The rising number of coronavirus deaths in California is likely to exceed that of New York, as the pandemic continues to devastate the country’s most populous state, reports The Guardian.
California recorded 44,494 deaths from Covid on Tuesday, just a few hundred fewer than New York, which recorded 44,969 that day. Deaths from coronavirus in the state have risen sharply in recent months, jumping from about 20,000 deaths in December to about 30,000 in January. It took the state six months to register its first 10,000 coronavirus deaths, but now the Golden State has an average of about 450 coronavirus deaths per day.
Governor Gavin Newsom tweeted on Tuesday: “A month ago, we reported 53,000 cases. Today: 8,251 cases. – A month ago, we reported a positive test rate of 14%.
