California says it is safe to resume distribution of the modern vaccine COVID-19

SACRAMENTO, California – California says it is safe to resume using a batch of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine after some people fell ill and suspension of injections was recommended.

The decision releases more than 300,000 doses for counties, cities and hospitals struggling to obtain supplies.

The state Department of Public Health on Sunday called for a pause in the use of the 41L20A lot of Moderna vaccine. This happened after less than 10 people had possible allergic reactions after receiving vaccines at a vaccination site in San Diego.

But the state’s epidemiologist says a security review found “no scientific basis for continuing the break” and the injections could start again immediately.

“These findings should continue to give Californians confidence that vaccines are safe and effective and that the systems put in place to ensure vaccine safety are rigorous and science-based,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Erica Pan.

The state consulted the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, as well as other medical experts and health officials from San Diego County, as well as the FDA, CDC and Moderna before releasing its findings.

The group said it was not clear why seven people had adverse reactions at the same location over the course of two days, but noted that none of the reactions were fatal.

The report noted that a large number of people received the same batch of vaccine at other locations across the country and no similar adverse reactions were reported.

The conclusions of the working group can be found at this link.
