California state epidemiologist Dr. Erica S. Pan issued a statement late on Sunday recommending providers to pause administration of batch ‘041L20A’ for the Modern COVID-19 vaccine due to possible allergic reactions that are under investigation.

“A greater than normal number of possible allergic reactions has been reported with a specific batch of Moderna vaccine administered at a community vaccination clinic. Less than 10 individuals needed medical attention during the 24-hour period, ”said Dr. Pan.

According to the statement, “Out of extreme caution and also recognizing the extremely limited supply of vaccine, we are recommending that providers use another inventory of available vaccines and pause vaccine administration from Lot Moderna 041L20A until further investigation by CDC, FDA, Moderna and the state are complete. We will provide an update as we learn more. “

More than 330,000 doses of this batch have been distributed to 287 providers across the state. The shipments arrived in California between January 5 and 12, officials said.

The state has not been notified of any other cluster or individual events related to this lot, according to health authorities.

“The manufacturer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are reviewing the batch and related medical information.

Suppliers of the COVID-19 vaccine must continue with their routine precautions to recognize and control allergic reactions and potential adverse events, “the statement said.

Health officials hope to provide an update this week as they learn more.
