California Newsom met online with Harry, Meghan, just before the US election

Prince Harry and Meghan risked a new fight by holding a secret meeting with a top US Democrat in the run for the American elections.

The California-based duo spent an hour chatting with the state’s influential governor, Gavin Newsom.

Their video link came shortly after they were widely criticized for entering the presidential election debate.

The virtual meeting took place while Governor Newsom was under pressure to replace Senator Kamala Harris with California – who became the new vice president – with another black woman.

A memo seen by The Sun reveals Meghan, 39, and Harry, 36, had the conference with Newsom, 54, who was widely considered a favorite of the White House on October 19 last year – two weeks before the election.

A spokesman said: “We do not comment on the content of the meetings between the governor and private entities or his team.”

It came weeks after Meg described the battle between Donald Trump and Joe Biden as “the most important election of our lives”.

She added: “When we vote, our values are put into practice and our voices are heard.

“Your voice is a reminder that you are important. Because you matter. And you deserve to be heard.”

In the same interview, Harry raised his real eyebrows as he said, “As we get closer in November, it is vital to reject hate speech, misinformation and negativity online.”

The meeting took place while reports in America stated that Governor Newsom was being urged to find a black woman to replace Harris, since his departure did not leave black women in the Senate.

He ended up choosing the son of Mexican immigrants Alex Padilla as the state’s first Hispanic senator.

Meghan has long been said to want a career in politics, with some suggesting she even decided to be president.

Crossing a line

Members of the Royal Family were supposed to remain politically neutral, but Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royalty to find a “progressive role” in the United States.

His comments were widely considered to be an attack on then President Trump.

At the time, Buckingham Palace advisers were reported to have warned that the pair was close to “crossing the line”.

Under Megxit terms signed 12 months ago, the duo promised that “whatever they do will continue to uphold His Majesty’s values”.

Mr Trump responded to Meghan’s comments by saying, “I’m not a fan of her. I wish Harry the best of luck, because he will need it.”

Meghan also revealed that she was calling Americans to encourage them to vote.

She became the first member of the Royal Family to vote in a big election after voting by mail in the United States presidential election in November.
