California man wanted in ex-girlfriend murder kills himself when police shut down

A man suspected of murdering his ex-girlfriend in front of his 3-year-old daughter in California last week killed himself in Texas as authorities approached, investigators said on Saturday.

Herbert Nixon Flores, 46, shot himself with a pistol after noticing that police cars were following him as he drove toward Dallas, the Irving Police Department said in a statement.

Irving’s police were working with the FBI Fugitive Task Force in Los Angeles to locate Flores, who is believed to be visiting a family in the city.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department released a surveillance video that appeared to show Flores killing his ex-girlfriend, Karen Ruiz, 35, in Pacoima.

The video shows Flores parking behind Ruiz, getting out of the vehicle and chasing the screaming woman. He fires several shots with a semi-automatic gun at Ruiz, who is off camera, before running back to the car, police said. A child can be heard screaming.

The police responded to the scene at about 9:35 am and found Ruiz suffering from several gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators tracked Flores to Arlington, Texas, where he was seen getting into a vehicle and driving toward Dallas, police said. Dallas police air and ground units helped monitor Flores’ movements until the police could arrive.

Investigators said Flores realized he was being followed and abandoned his vehicle. He walked on foot until he saw marked police cars stopping. Flores then killed himself with a gunshot shot.

The investigation continues. Irving police asked anyone with information to call the department at (972) 273-1010.
