California man injured in apparent shark attack off Maui

The man was about 40 meters from the coast when he suffered an apparent bite to his calf, officials said. He managed to reach the coast on his own and received first aid. The man suffered lacerations in his calf and is in good condition, officials said.

The shark was estimated to be 2.5 meters long, the department said in a press release. Authorities are still on site and advise bathers to stay out of the water.

The incident is the second shark attack of the year in Hawaii. The first took place on January 2.

Friday’s incident comes six weeks after a fatal shark attack in Honolua Bay, where a 56-year-old man died after suffering severe lacerations in his left leg, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The man was surfing in the early hours of December 8 when he was attacked by a tiger shark estimated to be 14 feet long, according to a list of incidents published by the Hawaii Department of Aquatic Resources.
Last year, six shark bites were confirmed in Hawaii. The chances of being bitten by a shark are less than one in a million, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
