California Governor Gavin Newsom canceled his scheduled coronavirus update on Wednesday for “a lot of caution” after a crowd of protesters supporting President Donald Trump invaded the United States Capitol.

“We are concerned about the safety of the California Congressional delegation and the US Capitol team, and we are trying to offer support in every way possible,” said the Democratic governor in a statement, adding that he is concerned about the safety of his team. in California too.

“Peaceful protest is an important mechanism for our democracy, but what we are witnessing in our nation’s Capitol building is reprehensible and a direct attack on our democracy and democratic institutions,” said Newsom.

The news comes as California faces the deadliest days of the Covid-19 pandemic. The state is reporting about 354 Covid deaths per day, a record weekly average and an increase of almost 49% compared to the previous week, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
