BYU’s Zach Wilson finishes 8th in the vote for the Heisman Trophy

For a while in 2020, BYU Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson seemed to have a legitimate chance to at least be among the biggest voters for the Heisman Trophy.

Those hopes faded over the course of the season, although on Thursday night, it was revealed on an ESPN show that Wilson finished eighth in the final vote.

The vote won on Monday.

This marks the first time since Ty Detmer was third in 1991 that a BYU player finished in the top 10 (Detmer won the prize in 1990).

Wilson, a junior who trained at Corner Canyon High in Draper and is widely known as headed for the NFL, ended the season with 247 of 336 passes for 3,692 yards with 33 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He also ran 70 times for 254 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Cougars ended with an 11-1 record.

Kyle Pitts of Florida and Ian Book of Notre Dame finished behind Wilson in 10th and 9th, respectively. Ahead of Wilson, Justin Fields of Ohio finished seventh, Breece Hall of Iowa was sixth and Najee Harris of Alabama was fifth.

The first four who will be in contention to hear their name be announced when the award is announced on January 5 are Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith of Alabama (it is the first time since 1946 that a team has had three players in the top five), Trevor Lawrence de Clemson and Kyle Trask of Florida.
