BYU Basketball: three keys to the Cougars’ 65-51 victory over Saint Mary’s

BYU ended its regular season on a high, beating Saint Mary’s 65-51 on Senior Night at the Marriott Center on Saturday.

Here are three lessons from the game:

  • The Cougars and Gaels struggled with their pitches in the first half, but the Cougars (19-5, 9-3 West Coast Conference) were scorching in the second half, with 66.7% of pitches. This allowed BYU to overtake Saint Mary’s 42.6% to 33.3% in the game. After the Gaels (13-8, 4-6 WCC) reduced BYU’s lead to 34-30 with 16:02 to play, the Cougars scored 14 of the next 16 points in the game to take control.
  • BYU had a 43-33 rebound advantage, which led to an 8-0 advantage on second chance points. The Cougars ‘bench also surpassed the Gaels’ 22-5.
  • Trevin Knell had the team’s record of 15 points, including four of 3 points, while the Cougars’ three seniors had solid games. Matt Haarms finished with a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) and added five blocks, Brandon Averette had 11 points, four assists, two rebounds and one steal, while Alex Barcello had eight points, five rebounds and a high team five assists .
