I don’t know what you call a 360-degree non-oscilloscope, where it’s actually two 180-degree turns on different axes. Impressive? Let’s go with this. Elegant and sliding stunting FPS Severed Steel seems to allow you to do one of those in slow motion as you work your way through a tower of villains. A new trailer shows you all the confusion you will get into as Steel, the vindictive sniper.
Among other games, Severed Steel is inspired by other first-person games, such as Mirror’s Edge and FEAR. The singleplayer adventure has destructible environments and lots of bullet time tricks for you to play running around the villains. Oh, but you can’t reload. No, you will need to get a new weapon when you are done.
“It’s you, your trigger finger and a steel toe boot against a bandit-filled superstructure,” says Greylock Studios. “Chaining wall runs, dives, jumps and slides to bring down the last enemy.” You can take it all and kick some people in the face, in this trailer here.
“I want Severed Steel to give players the feeling of entering a state of flux in a chaotic environment,” says developer Matt Larrabee. “I want them to dive into the air, with only a few rounds left of their magazine, with bullets whizzing by, rockets destroying the environment, but they feel that if they stay sharp, they can come out on top.”
In fact, it looks like a glorious mess. Sliding down stairs and onto benches and jumping on enemies is one thing. However, exploding through walls seems like a recipe for stupid AI absolution antics.
Severed Steel is planning to be released in the second half of 2021. You can find it on Steam until then.
