BTS didn’t exactly explode on Sunday in the broadcast of the 2021 Grammy Awards.
Sure, Korean boy band English hit “Dynamite” earned them their first Grammy for a K-pop team – but their hurried performance at the 63rd annual awards ceremony was less than explosive.
And the Seoul septet ended up losing its single night category for “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande.
Still, they made history as the first act of K-pop to feature one of their own named Grammy songs. (BTS provided an assist to candidate Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” during the 2020 broadcast.)
Their performance was almost drowned out by the online outrage of #BTSArmy fans who were crying #Scammys after their loss – but let’s see the bright side here.
Isolated at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, BTS released “Dynamite” to its quarantined fans as a gift. The gift came back to them – in the form of their first Grammy nomination.
The nod officially made BTS the first K-pop act to compete for a gold gramophone.
“A lot of people were sad and discouraged because of the COVID situation and it was kind of our suggestion to get up (everyone),” BTS Jin frontman recently told the Associated Press. “We should tour the stadium all over the world. There was no plan to release a single like ‘Dynamite’ ”, explained RM. “’Dynamite’ gave us a big hit in Korea, of course, a 2021 Grammy nomination, a performance, so you know, life is really interesting.”
“Dynamite” became the first hit of the seven-member group on the Billboard Hot 100 list when it launched in 2020. After years of recording the 40 biggest hits, breaking viewing records on YouTube and filling arenas and stadiums, BTS competed for the best Pop Duo / Group Performance.
“It’s really hard to put it in words,” said Jimin, another member of BTS, about his virgin wave. “Even now, we cannot yet believe that we have been nominated and will be able to perform at the Grammys. So, we are grateful. We are honored. “
BTS’s explosive success fought Gaga and Grande’s No. 1 hit – as well as the top 10 hits like Taylor Swift and Bon Iver’s “exile” and Justin Bieber and Quavo’s “Intentions”. J Balvin, Bad Bunny and “Un Dia (One Day)” by Dua Lipa, who led the Billboard Hot Latin song chart, completes the five nominees.
“I always hear ‘Rain on Me’. It is so good to hear this song on the treadmill. It was a success. It was a fire last year, ”said RM. “And, of course, ‘Intentions’, ‘Exile’ was crazy. EJ Balvin and Dua Lipa. “

His Grammy performance marked his second on the “biggest night in music” – they also helped Lil Nas X when he sang “Old Town Road” last year.
BTS revealed that they are currently working on new music – as a group and soloists. They said that Grammy approval creates some pressure for fans, but they are not letting success go to their collective heads.
“We try to keep our feet on the ground and put our feet on the ground and do what we do,” RM told the AP.
