The long and complicated Britney Spears tutelage saga – the legal arrangement that has dominated and controlled the life and finances of the musical superstar for more than a decade – has reached another, not entirely surprising, step this week. Variety reports that a Spears lawyer has moved to finally request that his father, Jamie Spears, be permanently removed from his role as she guys conservative one position he has been in detention (with the exception of at least one leave due to medical absences) for most of the past 13 years.

That position gave the older Spears incredible control over her daughter’s life, including medical decisions, the appointment of bodyguards and the ability to decide which visitors she can receive. Her daughter’s lawyer has now requested that this exclusive power now be transferred to Jodi Montgomery, who was appointed Britney’s temporary care manager after Jamie Spears was disabled due to the medical absence mentioned in 2019.

It is important to note that Spears is not, at the moment, in danger of being removed from her co-guardianship of her daughter’s property (ie her vast fortune and business) that he co-manages with the Bessemer Trust Company. (Although statements by the Spears legal team earlier this year, I suggest that she is also not happy with this deal.)

The issues surrounding Spears’ guardianship have been ongoing for years, but have recently been brought to light by Framing Britney Spears docuseries. The next hearing to determine the fate of the musician’s legal situation is scheduled for April.
