If you haven’t already, you’re missing a good show and one of the most interesting novels that TV has given us in years, thanks in part to the magnificent chemistry between Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne, and Regé-Jean Webpage, who plays Simon. You are also missing out on this article, because spoilers are coming.
In the first four and a half episodes, there are just a lot of looks, some kisses and a lot of nostalgia going on. But then, after the two are married (after a series of complicated and scandalous circumstances), Daphne begins to receive an education in the art of intimacy with her new husband. The show goes from zero (ok, maybe five) to 100 pretty fast and barely enough time to get your parents out of the room before it’s a complete montage of sex with an orchestral version of Taylor Swift“Wildest dreams”.

“I feel very proud of these scenes, honestly,” Dynevor told E! News. “We work very hard to make them look real.”
Dynevor and Page worked with an intimacy coordinator and blocked the scenes “as if they were intricate stunts”. Showrunner Chris Van Dusen described them as “heavily choreographed”.
“We had a lot of conversations about exactly what we were doing,” said Van Dusen. “It was all to make the cast feel comfortable, and we all really let them take the scenes as far as they wanted. These scenes were heavily choreographed, like an action sequence, like ‘Your hand goes here, your leg goes there. ‘They were all very, very rehearsed. “
Dynevor said that Van Dusen often described the first season as “the education of Daphne Bridgerton”.
“It is very important for the characters’ journey to see these scenes,” she said. “They are not just there to be there. They are there to tell this story of this kind of sexual awakening that Daphne is having and I think that is very important for her story, particularly.”
As for the delicious chemistry between Daphne and Simon, Page said that he and Dynevor were “incredibly lucky” to have that chemistry written on the page, both in Julia QuinnVan Dusen’s novels and scripts. But there was also a lot of preparation work for that.
“We were very well prepared,” he explained. “We had dance classes, writing classes – basically, a lot of time in each other’s arms before we even entered the set. And so you spent so many hours on the dance floor with someone, being around someone, literally taking each other when you fall – and we don’t fall because we weren’t brilliant dancers – so a lot of that happens in a very organic way. “
We are only in one season (and there are eight books just for your information), but we are now ready to declare that Daphne and Simon are among Shondaland’s most epic novels. Now, if you’ll excuse us, let’s go to a new watch.
