‘Bridgerton’ is Netflix’s ‘greatest series of all time’

About 82 million families watched the drama, based on Julia Quinn’s novels, in its first 28 days, Netflix (NFLX) said in a statement on Wednesday.

The company also claims that the program “entered the top 10” in each of its markets except Japan, and has reached number one status in 83 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, France, India and South Africa.

The romantic drama of the Regency era, created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, has created a buzz since it debuted late last year.

Set in 1813 in London at the end of Britain’s Georgian era, it is easy to see how the show’s sex scenes, scandal and period costumes would propel the spree-worthy show to success – and a second season has already been confirmed.
Netflix, Disney + and other streaming sites offer programs more diverse than cable TV.

“Bridgerton” was compared to “The Queen’s Gambit” in the sense that “it defies tradition and demonstrates that period dramas are not limited in scope or audience,” said Jinny Howe, vice president of original Netflix series, in communicated. .

“Chris Van Dusen and Shondaland’s reimagined regency was not meant to be history. It was designed to be more luxurious, sexier and funnier than standard period drama – and this is what surprised and delighted our members,” added Howe .

Netflix said it now has more than 200 million subscribers globally, after adding 8.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2020, exceeding its own expectations.
But the streaming service typically keeps its audience numbers secret, and the company’s data lacks nuance and third-party verification. Media critics are cautious of such self-report.

The company also faces stiff competition from its more recent rivals. 2020 was a great year for streaming, with the launch of new services such as Peacock from NBCUniversal, Discovery + and HBO Max from CNN’s controller WarnerMedia.

Still, Netflix does not seem to mind the proliferation of rivals – even with Disney + accumulating more than 80 million subscribers.

Netflix noted last week that while Disney + had a “massive first year”, Netflix still “recorded the biggest year of growth for paid members in our history.”
