Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen and Netflix this morning announced an official renewal of season 2 for Regency’s romance series.
In an interview in Today with Hoda and Jenna, he also confirmed that Season 2 will chronicle the wedding quests of Bridgerton’s older brother Anthony, played by Jonathan Bailey, as described in Julia Quinn’s second book Bridgerton Series, The viscount who loved me.
The change in emphasis raises questions about the future in the show of the romantic protagonists of the 1st season, Regé-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor. Their arc was well finished at the end of season 1, which was based on the first book in the Quinn series, The duke and me. It centers on the complicated romance between Bridgerton’s eldest daughter, Daphne (Dynevor), and Hastings Duke Simon Bassett (Page).

“I hope so,” said Van Dusen when asked if Page and Dynevor’s characters will be back next season. “They are, of course, now the Duke and Duchess of Hastings, but in my mind they will always be the Bridgertons and I think they will always be part of the show.”
Dynevor shared with Deadline last week that she didn’t know about her future on the show.
“I really have no idea what they are going to do with the second season, but I imagine that if they are following the books, then it would be Anthony’s journey,” she said. “I’m sure Daphne will end up getting involved. But yes, I wonder how it is. I’m excited to find out. “
He confirmed that production for Season 2 begins in late spring in London.
“We have a lot of new characters that we’re going to introduce,” said Van Dusen. “Anthony is going to have a love interest next season, and I think it will be as breathtaking, moving and as beautiful as the first season viewers can expect from the show.”
The love interest Van Dusen is likely to refer to is Kate Sheffield, the romantic protagonist alongside Anthony Bridgerton in The viscount who loved me.
Anthony is nearing the end of his relationship with opera singer Siena.
“We dropped him off at the end of the first season at a small crossroads, so I’m looking forward to jumping in and finding out how he does on the wedding market,” said Van Dusen.
O Bridgerton The book series consists of eight novels, each revolving around the love life of one of the Bridgerton brothers, and Van Dusen had previously indicated that he would like to follow the format with a season dedicated to each of the brothers and sisters.
Production for the first season ended in February, at a time when the pandemic was spreading on a large scale. During his interview, Dynevor was unsure how the luxurious series featuring hundreds of background actors and a series of sex scenes would be filmed under Covid’s security protocols. “I can’t imagine how it would be possible to shoot in these circumstances,” she said. “There are so many extras and so many members of the team, and it’s a very intimate show. I am confused how we would film it under Covid rules, unless there was a vaccine beforehand. “
