Brian Gutekunst: We could certainly franchise the Aaron Jones tag

Packers do not usually use the franchise brand, having last implemented it in 2010 with striker Ryan Pickett. Green Bay is the only team that did not use the 2011-2020 tag.

At his press conference on Tuesday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said there is no organizational philosophy against tagging players. And with running back Aaron Jones poised to become an unrestricted free agent, Green Bay can use the franchise or transition mark to keep him in Wisconsin.

“We certainly could. I think we’re working on it, ”said Gutekunst. “I think, again, it is not a philosophical thing to avoid that. I think there are usually better ways to do this. But certainly if I think that as we go on the road here next week or later, if that becomes what is in the best interest of the Packers, I think we will do that. But, at this point, we didn’t do that. “

Jones was selected for his first Pro Bowl in 2020, after running for 1,104 yards and nine touchdowns in the regular season. He also took 47 passes for 355 yards with a pair of TDs.

Jones and Jamaal Williams will become unrestricted free agents in a few weeks. But last year’s runoff choice AJ Dillon could take on a bigger role if Green Bay decides to move past its top two in 2020.
