Bracketology: Illinois strengthens control over its # 1 seed as the Big Ten tournament approaches

The last big Saturday of the regular season brought some confusion over the key. Starting from the top, Illinois got the nominee Player of the Year Ayo Dosunmu back and scored a major victory in Ohio in the process. This gives the Illini a good grip on the No. 1 seed room for now, but they will have to navigate a tough Big Ten tournament to maintain it.

The state of Ohio, for its part, remains with two seeds after the loss, as well as West Virginia after its loss at home to the state of Oklahoma.

One of the strange things about the Mountaineers’ tournament curriculum is that they have done better outside the home (10-3) than in Morgantown (8-5). His five losses at home were added up by 18 points, and two were in overtime.

Villanova lost their first full game without guard Collin Gillespie on Saturday. Justin Moore, who was supposed to take most of the time off for Gillespie, suffered a sprained ankle in the first half on Saturday, which coach Jay Wright described as “very serious”. It remains to be seen how long Moore will be gone.

Florida State was smoked in Notre Dame, costing the Seminoles the ACC regular season title and number 1 in the conference tournament. This now goes to Virginia, who won in Louisville on Saturday.

Six seedlings in conference tournaments lost on a chaotic Saturday – the most notable among them was Belmont, who was crushed by Morehead State 86-71 in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship game. The Bruins started the season 23-1 before losing to Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State in late February. Some thought that a Belmont with two losses could deserve general consideration, but that is now over.

Among the strange things that this pandemic season has given us is a conference with two teams unbeaten in the league game. Prairie View A&M and Jackson State ended without losing because the games between the two could not be played. The Panthers ended as the seed in the SWAC Tournament, and maybe those two will end up solving that on the court.

With the regular season ending on Sunday, I’m going to do some seed and bubble cleaning on Monday’s key, so there may be some movement in what doesn’t necessarily relate to today’s games.
