Hong Kong action film ‘Shock Wave 2’ debuted with $ 65 million, while Pixar’s ‘Soul’ received limited screens and debuted with only $ 5.5 million, but the film is generating word of mouth rave and may go up a little bit next week.

Hong Kong action sequel Shock wave 2 rocked China’s box office over the weekend, opening up to a healthy $ 64.5 million. Youth fantasy film Dream of eternity it also did decent business, debuting at $ 38.9 million.

Hollywood’s support posts, however, did not do well. Warner Bros. ‘ Wonder Woman 1984 was effectively extinguished, adding just $ 1.5 million in its second weekend, a 92% decline from its disappointing $ 18.8 million opening, according to data from the Artisan Gateway. The superhero bat, which cost $ 200 million to make, totaled just $ 23.9 million and is expected to earn just a little more. The first Wonder Woman film earned $ 90.5 million in China.

Disney / Pixar’s Soul, which debuted at Disney + in markets where the service is available, debuted at just $ 5.5. Amid a crowded frame, the animated title received limited screens for its Chinese arc, but that may change a little thanks to the word of mouth rave that the film is generating.

While Wonder Woman 1984 left Chinese moviegoers indifferent – scoring a humble score of 7.8 on the box office app Maoyan and 6.5 in Douban – Soul, directed by Pete Docter, is already benefiting from an openly positive reception. The music-themed film started in fifth place on Friday and finished third on Sunday, with an effusive buzz boosting its daily earnings. Soul has a rating of 9.6 from Maoyan, 9.5 from Taib Piao Piao from Alibaba and 9.2 from Douban – some of the best social scores ever for a Pixar title.

Shock wave 2the opening bid for has already exceeded the first Shock wave total movie profit of $ 58 million in 2017. Written and directed by Herman Yau, the sequel brings Hong Kong veteran Andy Lau back as one of the top bomb disposal experts. This time, the character is falsely accused of a terrorist attack and must prove his innocence during the escape. The film attracted Chinese action fans, scoring 9.2 in Maoyan and 8 in Douban. It earned $ 4.4 million of its total on 656 Imax screens. The film is co-distributed by Alibaba Pictures.

Master Yin-Yang: Dream of Eternity is written and directed by local teen favorite Guo Jinming, whose Tiny Times The franchise earned more than $ 300 million in China from 2013 to 2015. Like much of Guo’s work, the new film was met with a withering assessment from critics – some Chinese Marvel fans even accused him of copying visual elements from Doctor Strange (2016) – although it still performs quite well at the box office.

Dream of eternity is an adaptation of the Japanese author of Baku Yumemakura’s successful fantasy novel, Onmyoji, which has spawned countless adaptations of comics, TV, films and video games in Asia since its publication in 1986. Seeking to explore this pan-regional appeal, Netflix has acquired the worldwide streaming rights to the title (outside China) and will launch it online on February 5.

By Dante Lam The rescue, the previous weekend’s winner, fell dramatically, adding up to just $ 9.9 million for a total of $ 64.6 million over two weekends. The sharp decline ensures that the film will lose money and fall far short of Lam’s previous action blockbuster Operation Red Sea, which raised $ 575 million. It is unlikely that The rescue it will even have its $ 90 million production budget back.
