Boston College dismissed coach Jim Christian, with immediate effect, the school announced on Monday.
Assistant coach Scott Spinelli will serve as interim coach until the end of the season.
“I know that Jim gave everything he had to lead our program and mentor our student-athletes,” said sports director Pat Kraft. “At the end of the day, the program is not going in the right direction and, although I hesitate to make a coach change in the middle of the season in any sport, now is the right time to look forward. We wish Jim and his family everything best in their future endeavors and thank them for their service to Boston College. “
Christian has been in his seventh season at the helm since taking over from Steve Donahue in 2014. The Eagles peaked in 2017-18, winning 19 games and winning a spot at the NIT, but failed to finish above 0.500 on the ACC on any one of its seven seasons. Boston College is 3-13 overall and 1-9 at ACC this season after Saturday’s defeat in Syracuse.
Christian was 78-132 overall and 26-94 at stake at the BC conference.
This was an expected move; Christian went into the hot seat last season, but former sports director Martin Jarmond chose to keep him after the 2019-20 campaign. Jarmond then left for UCLA and Kraft took over as athletic director.
Several names have fluctuated in recent weeks as potential substitutes on Chestnut Hill, including Porter Moser of Loyola Chicago, former Michigan coach John Beilein, Michigan assistant coach Howard Eisley, Mark Bonmid from St. Bonaventure, Mike Rhoades from VCU and Randy from head coach of Saint Mary Bennett.
