BMW’s M models are high-performance by definition, but that doesn’t mean there is no room for improvement. That’s why the automaker will launch an even more powerful variant of the M5 later this year.
Presented on Tuesday, the 2022 M5 CS is a lighter and more muscular version of the high-performance sedan – even with its enhanced competition package. It is also a limited edition model that will only be available for one year and only in selected markets.

The M5 does not lack power. The base model features a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 600 horsepower and 553 ft lbs of torque. But the brand’s engineers were able to take the mill and squeeze 27 extra horses (10 more than the M5 competition). While some purists will roll their eyes at the lack of a manual transmission, the car’s acceleration numbers should more than make up for its exclusion. BMW claims the CS can fly from zero to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds faster than the M5 Competition and easily makes it the automaker’s fastest production car, according to the CNET Roadshow. A top speed of 190 mph is also not too bad.
But the credit for the car’s ultra-fast acceleration time also belongs to its reduced weight. The CS weighs 230 pounds less than the M5 Competition. This is mainly due to the new carbon fiber elements, including the hood, front divider, rear diffuser, rear divider and mirror housings, as well as the four cabin seats. Engineers also reduced the amount of soundproofing material in the entire car. These adjustments allowed the car to lose many pounds, all without having to sacrifice its all-wheel drive system. And if you’re concerned about the reduced weight changing the feel of the car, don’t worry because BMW has adjusted the car’s springs and shock absorbers accordingly.

From the outside, the CS doesn’t look much different from the M5 or M5 Competition, but it does have a number of striking golden bronze details, including kidney grilles, emblems and forged 20-inch wheels. Inside, you’ll find special CS badges, illuminated M5 logos, Alcantara suede, the company’s latest iDrive 7 infotainment set, and a digital meter cluster that will display even more information than the standard M5.
For now, BMW plans to offer the M5 CS only as part of the 2022 model year and only in the North American, United Kingdom, Germany and Russia markets. This exclusivity, along with a long list of performance and design updates, will not come cheap. The sports sedan will start at $ 142,995 when it goes on sale later this year, which is $ 36,000 more than the standard M5 and almost $ 30,000 more than the M5 Competition.
