A Microsoft Windows Update is wreaking havoc on printers around the world this week—KB50000802
(for newer versions of Windows 10; older versions of Windows 10 and the server may have a KB ending in 808
or 822
instead) was intended to provide security updates “when Windows performs basic operations”, but the update crashes some print drivers due to the overflow of a 10,000 GDI object limit.
The bug affects a wide range of printers and print drivers – we can confirm that we saw the problem on a PC with Windows 10 2004, which crashes with APC_INDEX_MISMATCH
(photo above) after printing on any of the various Kyocera printer models (some locations, others on a network).
If you are suffering from this bug yourself, you can get some relief by uninstalling KB50000802 until Microsoft releases a corrected update, probably on the Tuesday of the April patch.
On a Windows 10 or Windows Server PC version 2004 / 20H2, click Start -> type “Control Panel” and press Enter -> go to Programs, Programs and Features. From there, click on “View installed updates” in the left panel and uninstall Security Update for Microsoft Windows KB50000802)
.
For PCs with Windows version 1909, the same fix (and problem) is in KB50000808
. If you are on version 1809, look for KB50000822
. For more technical details, the Dutch technology website winking.be has an excellent overview.
This flaw can also affect PCs with Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 with KBs 848, 853, 841 or 851 … but if you are still on Windows 8 or Windows 7 at this point, you have worse problems than this one. Please update!
