‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler will develop a new Wakanda series for Disney +

Walt Disney Co. announced on Monday an exclusive five-year television deal with “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, which will include a series set in Wakanda to be shown on Disney +.

“Ryan Coogler is a unique storyteller whose vision and reach have made him one of the outstanding filmmakers of his generation,” said Disney Executive President Bob Iger in a statement. “With ‘Black Panther’, Ryan brought an innovative story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We are excited to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team. ”

Coogler is currently working on a sequel to the movie “Black Panther” for Disney DIS,
+ 1.66%,
despite last year’s death of star Chadwick Boseman. In addition to the series created by Wakanda, as part of the five-year deal, Coogler’s producer Proximity Media will develop series for other Disney divisions.

Wakanda, of course, is the fictional African kingdom that houses the superhero Black Panther. The 2018 film grossed $ 1.3 billion worldwide.

In December, Disney + announced an ambitious list of streaming series in the coming years, including at least 10 Marvel shows. It is unclear when the series created by Wakanda may debut.
