Black Panther director Ryan Coogler says that making the sequel without Chadwick Boseman ‘is the hardest thing’ for him, crediting Boseman as the ‘glue that held him together’.

Speaking with Jemele Hill on his Unbothered podcast, Coogler, 34, said he is’ currently going through the grieving process after Boseman’s death on August 28, 2020 from colon cancer.

Said the filmmaker: ‘One thing I learned in my short or long time on this Earth is that it is very difficult to have perspective on something while you are going through this.

“This is one of the most profound things that I have gone through in my life, having to be part of the maintenance of this project without that particular person who is like the glue that holds it together.”

Coogler said he was focusing on moving forward with the 2018 blockbuster sequel, differing between his professional and personal life.

‘Personal life, I will say that when you work on something you love, these things mix together, they come together,’ he said. ‘I am trying to find a balance between personal and professional life. But I haven’t gotten there yet, so this is undoubtedly the most difficult thing I’ve had to do in my professional life. ‘

He said he was motivated to perform, drawing on Boseman’s memory.

“I am extremely sad to lose him, but I am also extremely motivated to have spent time with him,” said Coogler. ‘You spend your life hearing about people like him. For this individual, who is now an ancestor, I was there for that.

‘It is such an incredible privilege that it fills you as much as it brings you down. Often, like blacks, we have to pick up the pieces after defeat. ‘

Boseman, best known for his role as King T’Challa in Black Panther, also starred in films such as 42, Marshall, Get on Up and Draft Day.

The actor was diagnosed with stage three cancer in 2016 and underwent “numerous surgeries and chemotherapy” in his battle against the disease, his family said, adding that he “died at home, with his wife and family by his side”, adding that ‘it was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in the Black Panther’.
