Birx, who previously held public health positions in the administrations of George W. Bush and Obama, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” program that colleagues often assumed that she was signing a political agenda with her role as coronavirus response coordinator at White House.

“Colleagues of mine that I knew for decades … decades in that one experience, because I was in the White House, decided that I had become that political person, even though they’ve known me forever,” she told host Margaret Brennan. “I had to ask myself every morning if there is anything I think I can do that is useful in responding to this pandemic and it is something that I asked myself every night.”

Asked if she considered giving up, Birx replied: “Always. I mean, why would you want to go through this every day? “

“I always feel that I could have done more, be more frank, perhaps more frankly publicly. I didn’t know all the consequences of all these problems, ”said Birx when asked about his biggest mistake on the task force.

She also described her continued frustration at the realization that her guidance was being ignored.

“[W]When it became a point where I was getting nowhere and it was like just before the election, I wrote a very detailed communication plan of what needed to happen the day after the election and how it needed to be carried out, ”she said. “And there were many promises that this would happen.”
