Bills supposedly program exercises with QB Chad Kelly: why is an interesting time

ESPN’s Field Yates said on Monday that Buffalo Bills had scheduled a training session with the legendary QB nephew Jim Kelly, the free agent’s quarterback Chad Kelly.

It is certainly an eye-popping exercise, considering how the depth chart currently looks to the Bills. Josh Allen and Matt Barkley are foldable and the team really likes Davis Webb and newcomer Jake Fromm, who was quarantined for weeks of play in an emergency with Covid 19.

Kelly has never played significant play in the NFL, but has had stints at the Denver Broncos and, more recently, the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts, you say? Now things are starting to make some sense.

Kelly was on the Colts’ training team in 2019 and probably has some insight into what their attack wants to do under the command of the head coach and play caller Frank Reich. Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane can kill two birds with one stone by bringing Kelly in for a look while perhaps chatting a little bit about their time in Indianapolis.

The Bills open the NFL playoffs with the first game of the Wild Card weekend on Saturday against the Colts at 1pm on CBS. The Bills will face Reich’s attack, led by quarterback Philip Rivers and featuring one of the league’s best young running backs, Jonathan Taylor, who ran over 250 yards last week at the end of the season.

Kelly played college football at Ole Miss and was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 draft. Kelly grew up in Western New York and attended St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, where she played as a defender for the Marauders.
