Billie Eilish, the anti-pop star who apparently can’t go wrong, potentially did so in the eyes of Instagram fans – and she called them “babies” because of that.
The singers of “Therefore I Am” and “Bad Guy” seemed to lose 100,000 followers this week, a drop that coincided with their participation in the viral “post a picture of [something]”Trend that is circulating on Instagram Stories.
The 19-year-old artist deigned to share images of her cell phone’s lock screen and a drawing she was proud of, the last of which featured serpentine slavery, as well as bare breasts and back of the Rubenesque variety. She put the caption “those probably lol I love breasts”.
Later, when a fan joked that she lost followers because of this, she didn’t measure the words, laughing and dismissing them as “babies”.
“LMFAOOO you babies, smh,” she wrote, censoring them with two skull emojis.
In the grand scheme of things, the recession took the Grammy winner from 73 million followers to about 72.9 million. And the discrepancy appeared to be resolved on Wednesday, when she again had 73.1 million followers on the platform. It is not clear whether the decline was related to the image or simply a normal fluctuation in Eilish’s popular public profile. The drop may have been just a handful of non-followers in the number bubble among millions that altered the rounded total in their follower count.
Instagram representatives were not available on Wednesday for comment.
But the fact that Eilish responded makes the flap more interesting. It is not the first time that the whispering singer, an iconoclastic performer who breaks without remorse with the tropes of pop stardom, has addressed the fixation of the public in her body. She starred in a short film about body image last May, after being chased for wearing baggy clothes. Gradually undressing in the film, Eilish clapped his hands back to shamers and unwanted opinions – not unlike his concise response to his NSFW doodle this week.
“Do you know me? Do you really know me?” She said in the movie. “You have opinions about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body … But I feel that you are watching. Ever. While the image sharing game continued on Instagram Stories this week, Eilish shared behind-the-scenes photos of her fried and dyed hair, then joked that she would not release her long-awaited second album if fans continued to make fun of it.
