Microsoft co-founder bill Gates funds medical research and vaccine programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and has often spoken about their belief in the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine. On Friday, it was his turn to get one. Gates tweeted a picture of himself – no glasses, rolled up sleeve – getting the first of his two coronavirus injections. He thanked those who helped to develop and distribute the vaccine and noted that he is feeling well.

“One of the benefits of being 65 is that I am eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine,” wrote Gates. “I took my first dose this week and I feel great. Thanks to all the scientists, test takers, regulators and frontline healthcare professionals who got us to this point.”

Gates lives in the state of Washington, which is currently giving the vaccine to anyone aged 65 and over, in addition to other people who qualify for a variety of reasons, including health professionals and first responders. Gates turned 65 on October 28, so he just joined.

At the end of last year, Gates encouraged Americans to wear masks and maintain social distance while waiting to receive the vaccine, and expressed his belief that all vaccines under development will work well.

In Inauguration Day Wednesday, Gates said he hopes working with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on issues like climate change and COVID-19.

“This has been a worrying period in America, but I see promise in the coming months and years,” said Gates.

Other famous people, including then-elected President Biden is an actor Ian McKellen, also shared photos of themselves taking the vaccine and encouraged others to do so when possible.
