Burr disagrees that “people are just waiting, planting in the bush”, finding a reason to cancel someone.
Bill Burr is the first actor in “The Mandalorian” to express an opinion on the resignation of Gina Carano due to controversial posts on social networks. During a recent episode of “The Bill Bert Podcast”, Burr showed support for his former “Star Wars” co-star, calling her “an absolute girlfriend”, and seemed to criticize the culture of cancellation on social media. Burr stars as Mayfeld in “The Mandalorian”, while Carano played Cara Dune. A Disney spokesman confirmed to IndieWire last month that Cara Dune will not be overhauled.
“It’s an awkward moment … Unless she did some really awful shit or said openly racist shit,” said Burr of Carano. “I don’t know. I think there are a lot of channels. And then you have to do some amazing shit … I don’t know what the fuck this is. I’m on that shit show. Now, I have to see what the hell I say.”
“She was an absolute love. Fucking super cool person, ”said Burr later about the actress. “And you know everything and somehow someone is going to make this video and make me say something else and try to get rid of my bald action figure … It’s just like it is out there. These are fucking crazy times. People just waiting, planting in the bush. “
Burr is referring to how Hasbro canceled the Cara Dune action figure after Carano’s dismissal. Lucasfilm announced on February 10 that he was severing ties with Carano due to his story of controversial social media posts, which culminated in an Instagram post comparing the current US political climate with Nazi Germany. Lucasfilm announced Carano’s resignation, calling his social media posts “disgusting and unacceptable”, in the sense that they “denigrated people based on their cultural and religious identities”.
Later on the podcast, Burr elaborated on his culture of cancellation, saying, “Now it’s getting like, ‘Hey, you made an ignorant comparison. (blushing sound) There goes your dream, right? I look at it and it’s like, ‘Who the hell is facing this?’ “
Carano is now developing and starring in a new film for the conservative website The Daily Wire. In his initial statement about his resignation, Carano said: “I am sending a direct message of hope to everyone who lives in fear of being canceled by the totalitarian crowd. I just started using my voice, which is now more free than ever, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They cannot cancel us if we don’t allow it. “
