Jets fans may be counting the seconds until Adam Gase is no longer the head coach, but Bill Belichick doesn’t think there is anyone better to work at Florham Park.
Before Sunday’s clash with the Jets, the Patriots coach answered questions about the team he worked for before going to New England, as well as defender Sam Darnold. Belichick made it clear how much he thinks of Darnold, who has apparently regressed in his second and third NFL seasons, and that he doesn’t think the QB could be in better hands.
“I don’t think you could have someone better train him than where he is,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
Gase, who is 9-22 in two seasons with the Jets entering Sunday’s game, admitted earlier this month that he believes Darnold’s difficulties are about him and the coaching staff. It is widely accepted that the end of Sunday’s regular season will be Gase’s last game with the Jets.
In 11 games this season, Darnold recorded just eight touchdown passes with nine interceptions. He lost four games this season due to a sprain in his right shoulder joint.
“I don’t think there’s a lack of talent or creative ability,” said Belichick of Darnold. “… He’s an athletic guy, big in size, big arm, hard to hold in his pocket, good perspective and is being well trained.”
