Biker killed on I-95 clocked at 124 mph, ‘splitting the lanes’ to flee soldiers

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Virginia – State police are investigating a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist who they say escaped from a police officer twice before hitting the back of a truck on Interstate 95 on Easter morning in Fairfax County.

Virginia State Police officials said a policeman registered a motorcycle speed going to 124 mph in a 55 mph zone on I-495 just after 9 am

“The policeman stopped behind the motorcycle and activated its lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle,” officials said. “But the motorcycle accelerated further and a chase was started. When the motorcycle approached the Woodrow Wilson bridge, the policeman ended the chase.”

Authorities said the same soldier was monitoring the I-495’s radar at about 10:20 am, when the same biker passed by at high speed.

When the policeman tried to pull over the motorcyclist, the driver accelerated and took the exit for I-95 south, according to state police.

Authorities said that when the motorcycle started “splitting the lanes” between cars on I-95, the soldiers stopped chasing it.

The soldiers then received a call around 10:30 am about a two-vehicle accident along I-95 to the south, not far from the exit for Route 1.

“When the soldiers arrived at the scene, they recognized the motorcycle as the one that was being pursued previously,” officials said. “Based on testimony from witnesses, the motorcycle hit the back of a Toyota Tacoma pickup. The impact of the accident caused the rider to be thrown from the vehicle and the motorcycle to catch fire.”

Police officers administered first aid, but the motorcyclist died on the scene, officials said.

His name has not yet been released, as authorities are still notifying his relatives.

The truck driver was transported with minor injuries.

“The investigation of the accident is still ongoing,” state police officials said.
